The threshold is almost always set under the front door. This was originally invented so that dust would not enter the room, excess noise and a draft would not “go”. Today we will talk about interior thresholds. Their goal is completely different. With the help of such thresholds, the transition from one floor to another looks more accurate and natural. Such products may consist of various materials, including the latest developments. However, many people still prefer wooden thresholds. They have a concise, simple and attractive appearance, and are also very durable. However, over time, any lasting thing is time to give way to a new one. Cracks, scuffs, scratches and other damage appear on the rapids over the years. If they are not noticeable, or not deep, then they can be easily repaired with putty and painted. After this, the product can stand for several more years. However, very deep and noticeable damage suggests that it is time to change the threshold - to dismantle it.
Dismantling an old, damaged wooden threshold
As a rule, any wooden threshold is very easy to pull out. It is enough just to take a metal scrap, pry the threshold from the bottom, and just tap the hammer at the other end of the scrap, creating a lever technology. Thus, you gradually, in a few strokes, dismantle the threshold.
But it happens, it happens that the threshold cannot be pulled out in this way. If the structure is deep enough and reliably fixed in a particular place, then you will have to dismantle it in a different way.
For the second method, you will have to try to pull out the nails that hold the product using a nail clipper or other improvised means. After this procedure, it is not difficult to pull out the threshold - you can simply knock on it several times with a hammer. Sometimes, in order to carry out this process, one has to first cut the threshold into parts and dismantle them separately.
If the product is attached to the floor with self-tapping screws, then they can simply be unscrewed with a screwdriver or screwdriver.
After the old threshold is removed from its former place, you can begin to lay the new threshold. However, before this, you will have to do some preparatory work to make the new product better in its new place. To get started, remove all debris from the prepared surface with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Next, wipe everything with a damp piece of cloth and let the base dry completely.
Installation of a new threshold
First, very carefully, slowly measure the distance between the pillars of the door. Then add another 4-5 centimeters for the stock to this figure. Remove excess centimeters on the prepared material and proceed to the next step.
Next, you need to cut openings on the bottom of the two door parts that will fit the size of the new threshold. These cuts are necessary so that the subsequent installation is more durable and of high quality.
The last step before installing the threshold is to make sure that it fits perfectly into the prepared place. Be sure to check if the doors close and open well. It is also advisable to check how the threshold converges with the door, and whether there are any gaps. This is especially important if the threshold is set under the front doors.
Now we come to the installation of the product. And first of all, you need to choose how it will be attached to the surface. Usually, they use nails, however, do not directly hammer them into the threshold. Thus, cracks, chips and faults can form. It is better to pre-drill holes with a drill. Just pick up the correct and necessary nozzle, which converges with the diameter of the prepared nails, and drill a certain number of holes.
After that, you can hammer nails into the holes. You can also use self-tapping screws that screw perfectly into the wooden material with a screwdriver.
If it is necessary to mount the threshold into a concrete base, then nails and self-tapping screws will not help here. Fasteners for quick installation may be best suited. To set a threshold on them, you will also have to do some preparatory procedures.
First drill a hole in the concrete with a drill. Next, attach the threshold to the base and start screwing into the holes of the dowel, which will be perfectly attached to the concrete base.
After you mount the threshold into the necessary surface, it is worth thinking about its appearance. The product can be painted with oil paints or a varnish coating can be fixed on it. The main thing is to remember that the threshold should fit in the color of the surrounding interior and complement it.
It is very simple to dismantle and install a new threshold, so there is no need to call craftsmen or a construction team. With the help of our tips, you can deal with the dismantling and installation of the product completely independently.
Repair or remove old nut
First of all, you need to determine the degree of damage to the old nut. If the wood is not rotten, solid, and the sill just cracked, then the cracks can be puttied with special putty on wood, and then sanded and painted. Repaired sill can last up to a dozen years.
But if the door threshold has fallen into disrepair, then it needs to be changed. Sometimes dismantling the door sill causes difficulty, due to the fact that the fastening points of the sill are hidden, and he himself is wound up.
To remove the old nut, you must first unscrew all the visible screws and pull out all the nails of its fastening. As a rule, the process can be simplified simply by prying the entire structure with a crowbar and nail puller, while the old nut is removed along with its mount.
If it just doesn’t work out that way, and you don’t want to break out the door piece, you need to remove the pieces in pieces - first cut out and remove the middle, and then remove the extreme parts from under the piece. As always, a drill, a jigsaw, an ax, a hacksaw, a chisel, a hammer will help. A jigsaw file is inserted into the drilled hole, with which longitudinal cuts are made .... In general, to break - not to build, to extract the sill, in the end, will succeed in every home master.
Do not install untreated door sills - any wood is susceptible to water and even more so to wet freezing. Also, the configuration of the nut should be such that the door fits snugly on it on the seal, just as it does on the loot.
It is possible that it will not be possible to acquire a nut of the right size and configuration, then it is not difficult to give it the desired shape on its own. As a rule, to form a ledge for the door to fit, you can make a cut of the required depth with a circular (jigsaw) and then remove the excess wood with a stonesta, and then sand it with sandpaper.
The simplest treatment is with drying oil. The threshold should be put in the bath with drying oil for a day, periodically turn over. But now you can find on sale special compounds for wood processing - antiseptic and antifungal impregnations. It is important to use a high-quality composition, which, as a rule, protects the first 5 years well. Then the processing must be repeated. After the size and position of the nut is verified, it is opened with a protective varnish and painted.
The fixing method depends on the base on which the wooden threshold is installed. If there is concrete under it, then you need to drill the anchor, if the tree, then you can just use screws or nails.
When installing a new nut, you need to remember that vertical slots between it and the loot are not the best solution. Therefore, the sills need to be inserted into the grooves of the legs or under them.
The legs must be sawed at a threshold level of at least 2 cm. Accordingly, the threshold should be wider than the doorway by 4 or more centimeters. Also, the threshold should fit snugly into the grooves of the groove, i.e. legs should rest on it.
The threshold can be fixed with oblique nails or screws that do not pass from above, but through its sides at an angle of 60 - 70 degrees to the horizontal. Then the hats will be hidden by the floor covering, which is joined with the nut.
In any case, it is recommended that in the wooden threshold, first drill holes of the appropriate diameter for screws (anchors in concrete) or for nails. This will prevent cracking and cracking of the wood over time.
Also, sills can be glued to liquid nails. But this is not the best option, since the threshold at the door will not be removable, and later it can only be dismantled by cutting down.
The simplest thing is to leave the nut not attached to the base, but only pressed with a spoon. But the evenness of the base is important, so that the nut does not move.
As you can see, it is not difficult to set the door threshold with your own hands. The main thing in this matter is the exact fit of the door on the sealant and high-quality impregnation and coating of the threshold, after which it will last a long time.
Step 2 - Remove Existing Wooden Threshold
The wooden threshold is located directly below the threshold. Use a hammer and gently tap with one end of the mount under the threshold at one end. By applying pressure to loosen the nails, then move the mount along the threshold, applying pressure in the direction of travel. Remove the threshold from under the door jamb. Raise the wooden threshold of the outer door. If there are nails that will not loosen, use a circular saw to cut them through the center. Set the threshold aside to use as a guide.
Replacing the old threshold is not difficult, and you can do this work yourself.
Today, a large selection of thresholds made of wood, metal and plastic is offered, but aluminum products are in great demand.
Their main differences are ease of installation and reasonable cost.
For fastening the constructions use the screws provided in the kit.
If the floors are tiled, then fasten new thresholds with a sufficiently strong and waterproof glue.
How to set a threshold?
Such work should be carried out only after installing the door, otherwise, it will be very difficult to install the door frame.
Fit can be done with a grinder, fine fit - on an emery wheel.
Since aluminum is easy to process, a file is used for the final fit.
After the holes are marked, the threshold is removed, holes are drilled in the floor.
Thresholds are placed on the mounting foam, which will provide a dense filling of internal voids.
Thresholds do not need to be sealed.
Panels serve as a support for the threshold, so you can decorate the existing gap and press the edges of the flooring to the base more tightly.
To replace a damaged part of the baseboard, you can replace the whole strip or only the damaged part.
In any case, the damaged area is removed, otherwise, an even cut will not work.
If your skirting boards are exclusive and you have not found a suitable piece, then you can restore the surface shape of the damaged area with acrylic or epoxy putty.
These materials are strong enough, but it can be difficult to finish grinding.
Therefore, the layer should be minimized during removal, then shrinkage effects can be avoided.
The most acceptable option is to replace the whole strip if the desired material can be easily found and bought in a specialized store.
The ends are finished according to the old model, which makes it possible to save time.
Step 3 - Make a New Threshold
Measure the threshold that was removed and trim the new board so that it matches the length. Make sure that the ends of the new board coincide with the ends of the original wooden threshold. Use a jigsaw to cut the notches as indicated on the old doorstep. Check the fit of the new board and make adjustments, if necessary, to fit the part. Sand the board and mow the edge in contact with the jamb, then prime and close the top and bottom.
Step 4 - Set the Wooden Threshold
You will have to wait a little while the primer dries. Before putting the threshold back into place. Put the threshold in its place, place the wooden block and use the hammer to hit the block, which will safely push the threshold into place. When the new threshold is in place, use nails and a hammer to attach it to the wall sill. It is necessary to use four nails located on the width of the windowsill. Apply sealant to the edges of the wooden sill to seal it. Once the sealant has dried, paint the wooden threshold with semi-gloss latex paint. This paint will help protect the wood from the elements. Use the instructions on the paint to determine the optimum drying time.
