How to change the program to open the file?

Answer: In order to change the program that opens a certain type of file in Windows XP, you need to change the file association. To change the file association of a particular file, you must first view the properties of this file.

You can view the properties of a file by selecting a file and selecting “Properties” in the File menu. Or you can simply right-click on the file, then select “Properties” from the pop-up menu that appears. The window that opens may look something like this:

In the above example, file properties are shown for Sunset.jpg, a JPEG image file. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer - This program is currently used to open a file. To change this file association, click the “Change” button. The following window will open:

In the group of “Programs” parameters of the window that opens, in addition to the list of programs recommended by the OS for opening the file, several other programs are available on the user's computer. Recommended programs are Windows OS programs through which the OS will be able to open the current file type. For this reason, you should select a program from the Recommended list of programs. Of course, you can select a program from the "Other Programs" list, but the file may not open at the same time.

For example, you can select Paint to open the Sunset.jpg file, rather than the Image and Fax Viewer. After clicking OK, Sunset.jpg will open the Paint program when the user double-clicks on the file. Although Adobe Reader is included in the “Other Programs” list, it will also be able to open this file. However, if the user selects Media Player Classic, it will not open the file. If the programs necessary for opening the file are not listed in any of the indicated lists, you can click the “Browser” button to view other programs available on the hard disk for opening the file.

Note: You can also set a preference for a program that determines which specific types of files this program will open. For example, if you want Paint to open all .JPG files, you first need to select Paint from the list, then click the check box “Always use the selected program to open all files of this type” (“Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”) .

After clicking OK, all files with the extension “.JPG” will open in Paint. You can always change the file association back to Microsoft FotoEditor and Fax Viewer or another program by opening the same window and following the same steps.

How to open a file once by a non-default program

To open a non-standard file once, follow the instructions below:

  1. Right-click on the desired file.
  2. In the menu that opens, select "Open with" and select a program from the list. If the desired program is not in the list of proposed ones, then:
  1. Click “Select program ..” (at the bottom of the list).

  1. Select the desired program in the window that opens.
  2. Uncheck “Use the selected program for all files of this type” and click “OK”. If the program that you want to use is not in this window, then click "Browse ...", find and highlight the program, then click "Open." When the program is selected, click OK.

Changing the program for the default file

  1. Right-click on the desired file and select “Properties”.
  2. In the window that opens, go to the "General" tab.
  3. Opposite the “Application:” item, click the “Change” button.

  1. The “Select a program” window opens again, in it, select or find the desired program through the “Browse ...” button.
  2. Make sure that “Use the selected program for all files of this type” is checked.
  3. Click OK.

Now the file you have selected and all files of this type will always be opened by the program you have selected.

Context menu

The easiest way to do all this is through the context menu.

  1. Right-click on the file for which you want to change the opening application and select the properties. In the window that opens, you can see the file type (format) and the application with which it opens by default. Click on the “Change” button.
  2. A new window appears in front of you, where you can see the available applications for opening files of this type. If for some reason you don’t see the program with which you would like to open the file, click "Advanced" and look for the desired application yourself.
  3. But in my case, everything is fine. I am going to change the new player of the eight to the good old windows media player (I do not have other programs for video here). Now I click on it and what do we see? The application has changed. It remains only to click OK and check how these files now open. Those. Now all AVI files will be opened through Windows Media Player, but this does not apply to other video formats.

Well, have you tried? Now opens as you like? If something happens, ask.

Control Panel

The second way to do our fraud is through our favorite control panel. What is the plus of this method? Yes, in addition to changing one type of file, you can choose that a particular program open all types of supported files. Those. if you set the default program to Windows Media Player, then it will play both AVI, MP4, MPG, etc.

  1. Open the control panel by any of the methods convenient for you and find the “Default Programs” item there.
  2. In the new pop-up window, select "Set default programs."
  3. Well, actually here we are expanse. Am I right? Let's practice the Cat Viewer program on cats. Go down to it and click on it once with the left mouse button. Now, on the right, you have two choices: “Use this program by default” (all supported files will be automatically opened using it) or “Choose default values for this program” (you can choose which file formats will be opened using it) .
  4. Well, with the first paragraph everything is clear - that's all. All programs are ours. Let's select the second item, "Select default values for this program." A new window will creep out before us, in which we will see the formats available for this application. That is, if we choose formats for the image viewer, then only graphic formats will be available to us. Voila! As you can see, this application opens only one image file format, namely JPG. I specifically did this for this article. And as you can see, the rest of the files are opened using the standard viewing application from windows 8. Let's select several more formats, for example GIF, BMP and PNG, and click “Save”.
  5. Now you can make sure that our image viewer will open the selected image formats.

Well? It seems nothing complicated! But that’s not all. Inhale deeply, crunch your fingers and neck, make a little pulls and move on.

Mapping file types to programs

In general, I would like to dwell on one small additional detail. Go back into the control panel and select "Default Programs." Only this time, enter not the first paragraph, but the second - “Comparison of file types with programs and blah blah blah. ".

Here we see all the available file formats and we can change the default application right here (Well, on the right you can see the applications that open this type of file at the moment). There is nothing complicated. You just need to click once with the left mouse button on the desired file format, and then click on the “Change” button, which is located above and to the right. Well, then everything happens as in our first method, i.e. a window pops up with a choice of available applications.

But in general, I wanted to talk a little about something else. When your browser is closed and you click on any link with the site that you found in some document, program, or from the website’s shortcut, the default browser will automatically start. So here you can set the default browser, which will open when you click on links from outside. To do this, you need to go down below, where there are already not file formats, but protocols. There you will find HTTP: //. This is what we need. Click "Change" and select any other browser in the same way. But if your browser suits you, then you generally can not pay attention to this item.

Well, that's basically all that I wanted to tell you in our today's lesson. I just wanted to add that if you value your files and data on a computer, then you definitely need to protect them from loss. And I'm not talking about a regular antivirus now. Everything is much more complicated here, data can be lost due to various reasons, both software and physically. Therefore, I recommend that you watch this video course, in which you will learn how to protect your files from loss or what to do if the loss has already occurred. Everything is detailed and accessible in the video, so don’t worry that it will be difficult for you. Not at all.

Well, I say goodbye to you today. I hope that my article was useful to you, so do not forget to subscribe to my blog updates, then you will not miss anything important. See you in the following articles. Good luck and bye-bye!

Quick program selection to open the desired file in any Windows

The easiest way to choose a program to open the file is with Windows Explorer. Works the same in all versions of Windows.

With this method, you have to choose a program to open a file of each type. For example, you will have to select separately a program for opening pictures in .JPG format, then separately a tighter program for pictures in .PNG format and all other formats that you use.

You need to click the right mouse button (hereinafter “RMB”) on the file for which you want to select a standard program that will always open it. In the pop-up menu, select "Open with" and a list of the main programs (1) through which you can open this file will appear on the right. If the program you need to open your file is in the list, then clicking on it, the file will open in it.

Such an action will open the file in the program of your choice only once. Next time you have to choose the program again.

To save the program you need to open the selected file type on an ongoing basis, or if you don’t have the program you need in the list No. 1, and you know that it is installed on the computer, click “Select another application” (2).

In the window that opens, the list (1) will list all the programs that can open this file. Select one from the list. If you want to save the selected program for all files of the same type (so that all similar files always open immediately in this program), check the box "Always use this application ..." (2).

Thus, you can set the default program for any type of file.

In other versions of Windows, the principle is similar. Example from Windows 7:

An example from the Windows 7 operating system

This method is not convenient only because for each type of file you have to manually assign a program like this, even if different types of files can be opened by the same program.

Assigning default programs at once for all types of files and protocols via Windows settings

Windows options allow you to assign default programs at once for all types of files that the program is able to open. Also, it is only through the Windows settings that you can configure programs that will be used to work with certain protocols, for example, so that all links open only in a specific browser.

Below you will find detailed instructions on the example of Windows 10. Settings for Windows 7 are very similar and will be considered briefly, there are only slight differences, mainly on the interface). Settings for Windows 8 are completely identical to the settings for Windows 7.

Open the Windows search and type the query “Default Programs” and then select the found “Default Programs” option from the search results and open it.

Information on how to use Windows Search is here >>

The list will show which of the programs that opens, for example, which program is used as a video player, which is a web browser, etc.

Here you can reassign programs to perform certain actions and to open certain files. To do this, click on the program already assigned for any action and select another one from the list (if no program is assigned, then click the “+” button). For example, you want to choose a different default browser so that all links from other programs open only through it. To do this, under the heading “Web browser”, click on the already assigned browser (if not assigned, click “+”) and from the list (2) select the browser we need, through which you want to open all the links.

Setting up programs to open files of a certain type

You can also set default programs for opening files of a certain type.

A similar procedure was described above in the previous chapter with the only difference being that in the parameters you can immediately assign programs for all file types in one place, and not individually through the explorer.

To go to the options for selecting programs that open certain file types, click on the link "Select standard applications for file types."

On the page that opens, in the column on the left (1) all possible types of files in Windows will be displayed, and on the right (2), a program that opens these files will be displayed opposite each file type. If the program is not assigned for some type of file, then you can assign it by clicking on the “+” button (3).

Setting up programs to open all types of files and protocols that it can open at once

You can configure the necessary programs so that they open everything that can be opened using them. However, you need to be careful with this configuration option, because it may happen that some types of files will not open in the program you would like to open.

For example, if you set up all the files and protocols that Google can open at once for the Google Chrome browser, it may turn out that, for example, PDF files will not open in the familiar Acrobat Reader, but in Google Chrome. This is possible due to the fact that Google Chrome can also open PDF files, and you just set up this browser so that it opens everything that it could.

To configure the necessary programs to open all files and protocols that they can only open at once, go to the "Set default values for the application" section.

Then, in the list on the left (1), select the program for which you want to set the default for opening everything that it can open at once. In the column on the right, click "Use this program by default" (2).

For example, Windows 7

In Windows 7, “Default Programs” for program settings for each type of openable files can also be found through a Windows search by typing in the query type “Default Programs”.

In Windows 7, the “Default Programs” window looks like this:

To select programs for performing certain actions in the system, you need to open "Configuring access for programs and defaults."

In the window that opens, you need to open the "Other" category; below, in the list, assign the necessary programs for each action.

To specify programs for opening certain file types, in the "Default programs" section, open the "Map file or protocol types to specific programs" item.

In the window, it remains to assign the necessary programs to open the desired file types. To do this, select the file type from the list (1) and click “Change program” (2).

In order to set the necessary programs by default for opening all the files that it is capable of opening for all protocols, open the "Set programs by default" subsection.

In the list on the left, select the desired program (1), and then on the right click "Use this program by default" (2).

The ability to set default programs for opening certain files will allow you to easily solve possible problems in Windows when, for example, links from Skype or some other programs open in the wrong browser. Or, some video files open not through that player. The instructions above will help you to compare the necessary programs with the necessary files, so that everything is as you like.

That's all! Have a nice day and good mood! ,)
