Chess board and the arrangement of chess pieces on it

There are only 64 cells on a chessboard, but real chess battles can take place on them. One half of the cells is black, the second white - 32 old and 32 black. According to the chess rules the cell is called a field.

Black and white are conventional colors. In the photo, part of the figures and the board are made using malachite. However, green shapes and fields are conditionally black

The correct position of the checkerboard

Before arranging chess pieces, it is necessary to correctly place the chessboard.

The board is installed correctly on the left side, incorrectly on the right side

An incorrectly placed chessboard is associated with a funny incident that happened in ancient times somewhere on the border. It was at the border that periodically met two gentlemen who played chess among themselves. One fine day, a customs officer became interested in the game, who noticed that the board was not located correctly. Those. The “chess players” did not even know the chess rules, but simply depicted a game. As it turned out later, the alleged chess players were smugglers - in chess pieces they hid smuggled goods (gold, diamonds :)).

Naming chess fields (cells)

If among our readers there are fans of the game “Sea Battle”, then they probably drew an analogy with chess - each field has its own address. For example, a1, b7, e4, etc.

Each chess field has its own unique address. It is highly advisable that you visually remember where which field is located. In the future, this will come in handy when studying the recording of chess moves. Note that the fields d4, e4, d5, e5 form the so-called center of the board. It is for a cent that a fight is being fought at the beginning of a chess game (opening).

To quickly remember the names (addresses) of chess fields, it makes sense to print a picture (A4 format) and hang it on the wall.

Names and symbols of chess pieces

There are 6 types of figures in the arsenal of opponents:

  • Pawn is a soldier of his majesty.
  • Knight - the knight’s value is equivalent to 3 pawns,
  • Elephant - its value, like a horse, 3 pawns,
  • Rook - heavy artillery (5 pawns),
  • Queen - 9 pawns,
  • The king is priceless, since without it the game is impossible.

Left to right: king, queen, bishop, knight, rook, pawn

Any beginner chess player, it is desirable, as early as possible, to learn how to record chess moves, for this you need to know the chess notation. Chess notation is a system of symbols used to record a chess game or the position of pieces on a chessboard. Already now you can familiarize yourself with the notation of chess pieces.

FigureAppearanceRussian abbreviationEnglish abbreviation
King♔ or ♚KrK (king)
Queen♕ or ♛FQ (queen)
Rook♖ or ♜LR (rook)
Elephant♗ or ♝FROMB (bishop)
Horse♘ or ♞TON (kNight)
Pawn♙ or ♟n or nothingp (pawn) or nothing

When studying chess notation, we will return to this table, and now we will figure out how to arrange the pieces.

Chess Pieces

Now let's see what the initial arrangement of chess pieces on the board looks like.

In this way, the figures should be placed, if we are talking about chess in the classical sense. However, other variations of the figures are possible, if we are talking about Fischer chess - they are called “random chess” in another way. While we are interested in the classical arrangement, therefore, it is necessary to remember it. Otherwise, confusion may occur, as in the stupid bull chess game for children.

To make it easier for you to remember the arrangement of figures, you can arrange them in a certain sequence. See one of the options in the video.

At the beginning of the chess game, there are 32 pieces on the board - 16 white and 16 black. At the end of the game, the minimum number of pieces can be two - this is the white and black king. Kings are the two most important pieces on a chessboard. The time has come to figure out what they can do - the whole truth about the chess king.

Chess board

The chessboard should be located as follows:

Only in this way and nothing else. White pieces should be located on 1 and 2 horizontals. Black, respectively 7 and 8

An example of a wrong arrangement of a board and figures:

Here the board is simply turned upside down. White pieces take the place of blacks and vice versa.

You may have noticed that the board looks like a coordinate system. So it is conceived. In order for each field to have its own unique identification number.

You see horizontally 8 Latin letters (exactly 8 and not 7 letters, as some people think). The letters indicate the vertical. The numbers on the left are the verticals.

There are 64 fields on the board. Or cells. Each cell has a name consisting of a vertical letter and a corresponding horizontal number. For example, “e5 field”. This field is highlighted in green on the chart:

In general, about the numbering of cells and the names of figures with their designations, you can read in the article - chess notation.

Initial arrangement of figures

In classical chess, the pieces before the start of the game are placed on the board in a strictly defined way: all the pieces are located on four horizontals. White on 1 and 2, black on 7 and 8. Rooks on the edges, then horses and elephants.

In the center, on the verticals d and e are the king and queen. It is in the mutual arrangement of the king and the queen that confusion most often arises. For ease of remembering, the rule is this: the Queen is located on the field of his color. Accordingly, the king is on the field of the opposite color.

Pawns are located in a row along the second and seventh horizontals. There are 8 on each side.

I recommend from the first steps to name the moves in accordance with the names of the fields. Usually, when analyzing a game, chess players say this: “Knight three.” This phrase means the knight’s move on the bottom of f3. Or: The queen beats de five ”- the queen broke the opponent’s piece located on the d5 field.

Shapes and moves

On chess pieces, we have separate articles. Therefore, we restrict ourselves to a short review. In total, each side has 16 figures. Each player has at his disposal a queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, 8 pawns and, of course, a king.

King - can make moves on one cell
Queen - at any distance
Rook - moves vertically and horizontally
Elephant - diagonally
Horse - walks in a zigzag. More precisely, - the letter G. That is, two fields forward and one field to the side. Read more in this article.
Pawn - can go either one field forward, or two - from the starting position. Read more about pawn moves in this article.
The king, queen, rook, horse and elephant can walk in any direction. Pawn - just ahead.

How to arrange pieces on a board

I recommend placing the pieces on the board, starting with the king and queen. Then light pieces, rooks, and then pawns. While you are still a beginner chess player, such a sequence will help to remember the value of chess pieces.

This is not strictly necessary, of course. Just the advice of an experienced chess player.

How to play a beginner

If you are a beginner chess player, I recommend starting the game with the move e2-e4. This is the most popular move in the world. There is an explanation for this.

The move e2-e4 opens the way for two figures at once: the queen and the elephant. In addition, White already the first move begins the struggle for control of the center of the board.

Accordingly, it is reasonable for Black to answer e7-e5 in response to e2-e4. The arguments are similar to the above.

In the future game I recommend to be guided by the following principles:

Develop light shapes - elephants and horses. It is better to bring the horses closer to the center of the board - to the fields f3, c3, f6, c6.

The center of the board - the fields e4, e5, d4 and d5 is the defining springboard for the struggle for advantage. Try to keep these fields in the field of view of your figures.

Try not to delay castling. For the safety of the king.

Avoid rash moves with extreme pawns, especially into two squares. This weakens the position.

For an early entry into the game of the queen there must be good reason. This strongest figure has great potential, but because of its value, it can turn out to be an object for attack. It is necessary to constantly withdraw the queen from exchanging for a less valuable piece.

It is understood that these are very general principles, outlined briefly. Dozens of monographs have been written to describe various chess strategies. If you are a beginner, everything has its time.

We emphasize once again: The initial arrangement of pieces on a chessboard in classical chess is strictly defined. In other types of chess, for example in Fischer chess, the arrangement is arbitrary. But this is a completely different story.

Party management

A chessboard consists of 32 and 32 identical cells, alternately light (white fields) and dark (black fields).

The chessboard is located between the partners so that the angular field to the right of each chess player is white.

A row of 8 fields that goes from the edge of the board closest to one partner to the edge of the board closest to the second partner is called the vertical.

A row of 8 fields that goes from one edge of a chessboard to another at right angles to the verticals is called the horizontal.

A series of fields of the same color touching each other by corners is called a diagonal.

Blackboard Location

In the initial arrangement of pieces on a chessboard, the rules are strictly observed, providing for each unit a specific place. Later in the game they will move around the board, but before the game they must occupy a certain position. It’s easy to remember the location; it’s enough to arrange the pieces on the board 2-3 times yourself. For beginners, the following installation procedure is most convenient:

  • put rooks on the extreme cells of black and white,
  • horses are located near them,
  • elephants are set next
  • the last to be the king and queen
  • pawns are placed on the next horizontal line in front of the main pieces.

Each set has 2 rooks, a horse, an elephant. These figures occupy a white and black square in the diagonal. Compliance with the rule will ensure the correctness of the moves. After setting all the figures you can start the game. You can see how it looks in the picture below.

Starting position, how to arrange chess on the board (photo):

The value of the figures, their "value"

During the battle, the player has to sacrifice pieces to complete the tasks. Battle participants have different values. It must be taken into account when making a decision. To do this, you need to remember the value, "value" of each figure:

  • the king is an invaluable figure, you cannot continue the game without him,
  • the queen has the highest value, he can perform the functions of 9 pawns,
  • horses and bishops cost 3 pawns,
  • pawns are considered soldiers, perform minor tasks.

Each figure has certain differences. Sometimes in gift options they have an unconventional look. But you can still tell the elephant, horse, rook or queen.

Chess Pieces

In the process of teaching chess skills, a beginner will have to study chess games. Later there will be a desire to record your parts. In order to “read” parties, moves, and correctly record the course of the battle, it is necessary to remember the designation of the figures in the Russian and English versions:

  • king - Kr (K-king),
  • queen - Ф (Q - queen),
  • elephants - C (B - bishop),
  • Rooks - L (R - rook),
  • horses - K (N - kNight),
  • pawns - p (p - pawn).

Pawns may not have a designation. In addition to letters for chess pieces, symbols are used. They are necessary for the image of the arrangement of units on the board in manuals, books. The rules for designating pieces are called chess notation, which every beginner needs to learn.

Recommendations for beginner chess players

The rules for arranging pieces are the first step for every beginner chess player. You need to study all the nuances before learning how to move units, the general principles of the game. There are several recommendations of experienced chess players that will be useful to every beginner, will help you quickly learn the secrets of the game, avoid mistakes:

  • when installing the board, you need to remember that the white cell should occupy the rightmost position,
  • you can set the main pieces in any order, the queen must occupy the cell of its color,
  • at the preparation stage, you should carefully study the value of each figure in order to avoid unjustified losses,
  • it is necessary to remember the designation of the figures, symbolism, the rules for determining the address of the field for studying literature, competent recording of moves.

One of the attractive qualities of this game is unlimited possibilities in choosing tactics, strategies, the ability to develop their own combinations. However, at first you should not rely on your mathematical abilities. At first glance, chess may seem like a simple game due to specific rules. However, every beginner quickly becomes convinced that this game has high complexity.

Beginning chess players need to take time to study the literature, which contains recommendations on tactics and strategies, and traditional parties are examined in detail. This will allow you to quickly understand the features of the game. A beginner who has carefully studied the famous openings is unlikely to miss, will receive a simple checkmate in three moves. Later, the skill will come, their own options will begin to be developed, combinations that will help to confuse even an experienced master.
