How to park in reverse between cars - a diagram and instructions for beginners

It is no secret that existing driving schools practically do not provide any driving skills, and even more so when performing certain complex maneuvers on a car. An insignificant number of hours allotted to practice driving skills is enough only for acquaintance with governing bodies and short trips on city routes. Therefore, most motorists have to learn on their own how to park properly, how to drive into the garage and the inspection hole, how to make maneuvers with a trailer, etc.

So you need to be able to park, though how to go back))

The modern metropolis with its crazy heavy traffic and the density of cars on the roads puts great psychological pressure on beginners. At rush hours there is literally nowhere to stick your car in. Roadsides and parking lots are occupied by a string of densely standing cars, it is not so simple to call in an empty place and correctly park the car so as not to block the exit for others. This requires certain hours of training in a vacant lot or in the yard in order to “fill” the eye and arm and adapt to the peculiarities of the behavior of your car.

How to park before

The easiest way to park is to park the car in front. Typically, such a scheme is used in parking lots near shopping centers, in underground garages of hypermarkets, in paid parking lots, in courtyards of residential areas in designated areas designated specifically for cars. With appropriate skills, this method takes the least time and is easy to learn.

Parking methods front

Parking in front parallel to the curb

You can park in front of the parking lot in parallel or perpendicular to the curb of the road or parking area. It is convenient to park a car along the curb, because it will be easier to leave the parking lot. However, this can only be done in cases where there are few cars and a lot of free space (the distance between neighboring cars is 2 times the length of your car). In most cases, permitted parking spaces are marked perpendicular to the curbs or at some angle in the direction of travel. Therefore, it is extremely rare to park in a parallel way in a large metropolis.

With perpendicular parking in front there is nothing complicated, the main thing is to be careful

Parking rules perpendicular to the curb are quite simple. In order not to hurt the neighboring car at the entrance to the parking lot, you need to remember that the radius of the trajectory of rotation of the rear wheels is shorter than that of the front wheels. They shorten (cut) the turn. Therefore, you need to turn the steering wheel towards parking at the moment when the bumper of a neighboring car is already past the middle door pillar of your car.

To quickly learn how to park in front, first ask a friend or a parker to help outside adjust your actions. Two or three training races will be enough to gain confidence in their actions. A good helper in this matter are parking sensors with circular visibility.

How to drive to the parking lot
Arriving at your destination, you need to worry in advance about the upcoming parking. To do this, you need to reduce the speed as much as possible so as not to slip through the free parking space, occupying the extreme right lane and snuggling closer to the curb. If in front of you someone leaves the parking lot, freeing up free space, you can stop and turn on the right turn signal light. Thus, you declare to others about your intention to take this place.

According to the parking rules, it is necessary to give a place to the departing car to perform the necessary maneuver. After that, proceed to implement your own maneuver. The size of the free space must contain at least 1.5 of the length of your car, so that it is safe for others to park safely.

How to reverse parking

Controlling a car in reverse especially requires a large number of workouts to reinforce skills to the opposite mirror reaction of the car to steering wheel rotation. In this case, the driver must have a good spatial orientation and imagination. This version of the car is more complex and takes more time than front parking. However, reverse parking allows you to quickly and without unnecessary maneuvers leave the parking lot at the exit.

Parallel reverse parking

The most difficult way to set up cars is to park cars in one line, when they are installed one after another parallel to the road or parking curb. This method is often found in narrow streets near shops, offices, on driveways to residential multi-storey buildings. For the successful implementation of this method, it is necessary to have a space between cars 1-1.2 m longer than the length of your car.

Scheme of parallel parking in reverse. But for a better understanding, watch the video

Parallel reverse parking sequence includes the following steps:

  1. To start the maneuver, you need to drive through the parking place and stop next to the front standing car. The interval between it and your car should be within 0.5-1 meters. Wheels must be installed evenly.
  2. Starting a slow backward movement, you need to control this interval, avoiding rapprochement. Having noticed the rear bumper of this car on the right side rearview mirror, you need to stop.
  3. Having unscrewed the wheel to the right to the end, continue driving in reverse, observing the image of the rear car in the left rear-view mirror. When the right headlight of the rear car and its entire front end are observed in the mirror, it is necessary to apply the brake.
  4. Align the steering wheel and continue to drive backwards. controlling on the right mirror interval to the first car. First, a taillight appears in the mirror, then it gradually leaves the field of view.
  5. Turn the steering wheel to the left to the end and continue to slowly move backwards, while simultaneously controlling the distance to the rear car and through the windshield, the distance to the front car, which can be hooked by the bumper when performing such a maneuver. If you do not fit into such a turn, then errors were initially made in the calculation of distances, and all maneuvers must be started anew.
  6. When reaching the position of the machine parallel to the curb, you need to stop, align the wheels and drive forward, setting the same distance between the front and rear cars.

In this parallel parking in reverse can be considered completed. At the same time, neither the nose nor the rear of the car should protrude from the general row of vehicles and interfere with passing vehicles. To comply with safety rules, you must consider how to install the front wheels in a parking lot with a slope. If you are parked on the descent, then the wheels should be deployed in the direction of the curb. On the rise, on the contrary, the wheels should be turned away from the curb. In this case, the curb is a natural focus, preventing the car from moving independently on a slope if the parking brake fails.

Method 1: perpendicular parking on the right

Step 1. Select a parking space. In the parking lot, follow the same rules as on the road, keeping to the right side of the lane between rows of parked cars.

After choosing a parking spot to the right of your car, turn on the right direction indicator so that other drivers will understand that you plan to park in this place.

Slowly drive past the free parking space, making sure that there is enough space for your car. Check for obstructions in the parking lot and make sure that the cars on both sides are actually parked.

When you drive past, slow down to a minimum. Keep a distance of about 1 meter from parked cars.

When your rear bumper is flush with the left side of the car parked to the right of your chosen location (brown car in the figure), stop completely.

Step 2. Get ready for the move. Engage reverse gear. Make sure that the direction indicator is on during the maneuver.

Look in the mirrors and make sure there are no other cars in the back or next to you.

Keep an eye on the right side of your car using the right mirror. Keep the angle of the rear bumper in sight and keep a distance between it and the parked car.

Step 3. Start parking in reverse. Turn the steering wheel as far as possible to the right, and then turn half a turn to the left.

Tip. When reversing, place your right hand on the back of the front passenger seat and look over your right shoulder. The steering wheel rotates only with the left hand.

Drive slowly in reverse gear. You will find yourself in a parking place. Periodically look in the left mirror so as not to collide with the car to your left.

Step 4. If necessary, make adjustments. Make small changes with the steering wheel to center the car in the parking space.

Tip. It is important to understand the overall dimensions of your car. It is difficult to determine the length of the car while in the driver's seat. If necessary, leave the car during parking and check its position to make sure that you do not hook on other vehicles.

If you drive too close to the car on the other side of your car, stop. Switch to first gear and lean forward slightly, correcting the position of the car in the parking space.

Step 5. Reverse to the end. Continue driving until the distance between the rear bumper and the border of the parking space is 15-30 cm. Remember about vehicles and obstacles such as curbs, lampposts and supermarket carts. Leave 15-30 cm between the bumper and various obstacles.

Step 6. Put the machine on the parking brake. Estimate the distance between your car and other vehicles. Be sure to leave enough space to open the doors.

If there is not enough space to exit your car or cars located nearby, shift into first gear and slowly move forward, correcting the position of your car. Try to center your car and come back.

Perpendicular reverse parking

Sequence of actions for perpendicular rear parking

The final maneuver. Watch the video in more detail

To set the car perpendicular to the curb, you need to find free space between the standing cars, which exceeds the width of your car, taking into account open doors. This method is much simpler than the previous one and takes less time. For the correct execution of perpendicular parking in reverse, it is recommended to observe the following procedure:

Method 2: perpendicular parking on the left

If you liked the parking space located on the left in the direction of travel, you can do the following:

  • find a place for a U-turn, after which the “cell” for parking will already be on the right side (and then you already know what to do),
  • wait until oncoming cars pass by and park in the back seat of your choice.

Tip. If you decide to park on the left, you need to do this calmly, but quickly. A lengthy parking process blocks traffic and annoys other drivers.

Step 1. Select a parking space. Analyze oncoming traffic in the parking lot. Turn on the left turn signal light, which will inform other road users that you plan to park.

When there are no oncoming cars, leave on the left side of the lane and keep at a distance of about 1 meter from the cars parked on the left.

Step 2. Choose a suitable position. Stop your car at the moment when your rear bumper is aligned with the angle of the bumper of a parked car.

Step 3. Engage reverse gear and start parking between cars. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, and then back to the right about half a turn.

Step 4. Continue to park slowly. Look in the left rear view mirror to keep a safe distance between the rear bumper and the vehicle near you.

Check your surroundings constantly through the right mirror and the interior mirror to make sure you don’t bump into other vehicles or obstacles.

Step 5. Complete the reverse gear. When your vehicle is in parallel with other vehicles, align the wheels by turning the steering wheel to its original position.

Continue to reverse slowly until 15-30 cm between the rear bumper and the obstacles or markings.

Step 6. Put the machine on the parking brake. Estimate the distance to the vehicles on the sides and behind you. If you drive too close to one of the cars and this creates difficulties for boarding / disembarking, you need to correct the position of the car.

Detailed video on perpendicular rear parking

  • When approaching a nearby parked car, turn sharply to the left when aligning your right mirror with the right headlight of this car. Drive forward with the car perpendicular to the curb.
  • Align the wheels and slowly take them back, controlling the distance to the first and second cars on both side mirrors. Turning the steering wheel, achieve approximately the same interval to the cars on the right and left sides.

Method 3: parallel reverse parking

Parallel parking can scare even experienced drivers, especially in places of heavy traffic. Keep calm during the procedure. If you practice in advance in areas with minimal traffic, this will prepare you and help to avoid unnecessary stress in the future when you find yourself in conditions of heavy traffic.

Tip. If you plan to park on the left side of the street, for example, if there is one-way traffic, follow the tips published below, but replace the left with the right and vice versa.

Step 1. Approach the parking space. As soon as you notice a suitable place for parallel parking on the right in the direction of travel, slowly approach it by turning on the right direction indicator.

Estimate its size. It is advisable that the free space is approximately 50% longer than the length of your car. If the place is clearly small, look for another option.

Step 2 Establish the car in a starting position. Pass by an empty seat and stop at that moment, when the rear bumpers of your and a nearby car will be approximately at the same level. The distance between your cars should be approximately 30-50 cm.

Step 3. Get ready for parking. Engage reverse gear, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and hold it in this position.

Step 4. Begin to slowly take back. Your vehicle must first enter the parking space at an angle. Be careful in steering the steering wheel using both hands.

Step 5. Align the wheels. When the driver’s side mirror aligns with the rear bumper of the car on the right side, stop for a second and align the wheels (they should be standing straight).

Continue driving slowly backward until the right corner of the front bumper aligns with the rear bumper of the car parked in front.

Step 6. Turn the steering wheel to the left. Stop for a second and turn the steering wheel all the way to the left.

Continue driving in reverse gear. The front of your car will rotate, taking the correct position in the selected location.

Step 7. Reverse until your car is parallel to the curb. Try to keep the distance between your car and the curb about 15-45 cm.

Step 8. Correct the position of the car if necessary. Align the steering wheel. Move back until you are 15-30 cm from the bumper of the car behind you. Turn the steering wheel in the direction in which it is necessary to align the position of the car.

Drive forward so that your car is approximately centered between the cars front and rear.

You can easily leave the parking space by passing a little back, and then turning the front wheels to the left and driving slowly forward. Once your front bumper and rear bumper in front of a standing car have successfully extended, you can fit neatly into the traffic flow.

Reverse parking can be both simple and quite complicated. But constant practice, a clear step-by-step instruction (scheme) that you need to keep in your head, and the ability to relax will help even novice drivers to cope with this task.

Several independent attempts under the control of a parker or a friend will allow you to quickly gain confidence, develop an eye and management skills.

Practical benefits

Experience is an indispensable assistant for any driver. And he is acquired only in the process of practical driving. It is better to gain such experience in safe training conditions when strangers and cars do not interfere, at special training grounds or vacant lots. Light fences that simulate the location of cars and buildings will not harm the body in case of errors in calculation and accidental collision with them. Training will allow you to feel the size of the car, the turning radius of the front and rear wheels, the amount of distortion of the distances in the mirrors. They will bring, in the end, a feeling of satisfaction from driving, relieve excessive nervousness.

Parking errors

Why start with an analysis of the most common mistakes? At least in order not to subsequently step on a rake that is generously scattered in the thick grass of road tricks. So how do you learn to park in order to prevent the most common mistakes?

Most often, novice drivers incorrectly evaluate both the size of the parking space and the dimensions of their own car. In order to correct the situation, it will be enough to show diligence during training on the race track or somewhere in the wasteland, where you can simulate the parking situation. Try to test yourself in reverse gear in an open area, turn in different directions and try to observe the markup of the imaginary parking space. Believe me, with maximum effort, you can learn to park with your eyes closed (which, however, we strongly recommend not to do).

Another mistake that even experienced drivers make is that they park exclusively in the mirrors. How often can you hear the advice of instructors not to turn their heads during parking! However, one important detail must be taken into account - the mirrors have a rather narrow view, so turning your head will be a very useful addition. But, of course, give 70 percent attention to mirrors, thanks to which you can more accurately control obstacles, and therefore increase the maneuverability of the machine.

Electronic assistants

To make life easier for drivers, carmakers come up with various tricky devices that help parking. The most popular of these is parking sensors, which, using sound or visualization, tells the driver how close the car is to an obstacle. In premium cars, you can often find echoes of high technology - parking assistants who can park a car without driver assistance.

But, as they say, hope for a gadget, but don’t be a bad guy. The ability to park quickly, accurately and independently will never be superfluous, given that free space in large cities is becoming less and less.

The basics of proper and competent parking

Today, on the streets of European cities, you can often see how one car pushes others, trying to free parking space for themselves with the help of a bumper. But our mentality is still far from perceiving a crumpled and scratched bumper for granted. Therefore, we will be content with domestic and, importantly, legal parking methods.

There are different ways of parking: reverse and forward, parallel, perpendicular and diagonal. By the way, the last three methods can be performed both forward and reverse.

Parallel parking in tight spaces

This type of parking is considered one of the most difficult for novice drivers. However, having mastered this technique, you will not have any difficulties with parking in the future.

Brief instructions for parallel parking:

  1. Gently approach the parking space and stop the car parallel to the car for which you are going to park. In this case, it is necessary to observe a distance of 50 cm to 1 meter (depending on the situation).
  2. Twist the steering wheel all the way to the left and start moving, guided by the left mirror.
  3. Align the left rear corner of your car with the front corner of the car, which is behind, align the steering wheel (one and a half turns to the left).
  4. Slowly back straight forward and level your bumper with the bumper in front of a standing machine. Having done this, twist the steering wheel all the way to the left and track the distance to the edge of the curb or curb (it is best to use a special spherical mirror). The car must be placed strictly parallel to the roadway.

By the way, parallel parking is best done in reverse, because the maneuverability of the car in this case increases dramatically.

Perpendicular parking

This type of parking can be easily "saddled" if you accept the simple rules of the game, and then bring the manipulation of the steering wheel and pedals to automaticity.

  1. It’s best to find a parking place that will subsequently allow you to fully open the doors on both sides of your car,
  2. You should stop about a meter from parked cars,
  3. Mentally draw a conditional line starting in the center of the rear wheel and ending in the area of the driver’s seat, and then connect it to the vertical with the intersection point on the rear arch,
  4. On the parking markings, it is necessary to select the extreme right point for which you are going to turn,
  5. Engage the right turn and reverse gear and turn the steering wheel 1.5 turns when your conditional intersection in the car connects to a point in the parking lot,
  6. Return the steering wheel to its original position when the car is parallel to other cars.

It is important to bring all movements to automaticity, and then all this parking turmoil will seem easier for you than a turnip.

Parking problem

No wonder they say that parking is a whole science, which in some cases does not forgive the mistakes made by the motorist. Simply put, the correct and extremely accurate setting of a vehicle to one of the parking places is a guarantee that the driver will keep his car safe and sound, and also will not create an emergency.

Typically, novice motorists experience difficulties with parking maneuvers. However, drivers with experience do not always cope with them. At the same time, training in driving schools is designed in such a way that applicants for driving licenses devote most of their time to driving theory than to practice. In particular, a few hours are devoted to the same parking for a car instructor.

In fact, novice motorists begin to comprehend the wisdom of parking only when they receive the coveted driver's license. Therefore, it is not surprising that almost every novice driver, during a parking maneuver, will necessarily catch a nearby car. And his happiness, if it is a budget foreign car, and not a prestigious premium car.

According to statistics, in 2016 the fleet of Moscow exceeded 5 million cars. An impressive figure. Especially when you take into account the fact that the capital of Russia is not designed for so many cars. Its residents lack not only specially equipped parking lots, but also elementary spaces in order to park the car.

If for some reason the city dweller is late at work and returns home later than usual, then he will have to spend a lot of time finding an empty parking space near his home.

Our recommendations

Not all parking spots are considered safe. You yourself must assess the situation by examining the potential location of the incident. Make sure that no construction work is being carried out anywhere nearby and that no icicles hang threateningly from the edge of the roofs.

If you use reverse gear, it never hurts to turn on the emergency gang, which will notify other drivers that you are making a potentially dangerous maneuver.

A repeat of the main rule will not be superfluous: look carefully at the mirrors and twist your head if necessary. And also always think not only about how to enter the parking lot, but also how to leave it.

They say that you can find out about a person by watching how he parks. A parallel parking - this does not mean the situation when you put the car and you are completely parallel. And if you ever hear somewhere like this: “So, dear, a little forward, now a little backward. oppa. and now a little to the right. voooot. and now abruptly ahead! ”, do not think that they have sex there. It is possible that they simply park there.

Beginner Mistakes

Of course, every novice car enthusiast is sure that he will be able to avoid the most common mistakes in the parking process. But excessive self-confidence plays a cruel joke with them. And in the end, they step on the same rake that already experienced road users could not go around at the beginning of their driving experience.

In a word, history repeats itself. However, novice motorists still have a chance to avoid duplication of other people's mistakes. To do this, they need to thoroughly study them and, if possible, "test" in urban conditions.

One of the most common mistakes made by novice drivers is an incorrect estimation of the size of not only a parking space, but also their own car. Regular training at the circuit or elsewhere will help to avoid it. For example, in a vacant lot.

The main thing for a beginner car enthusiast is to create a parking simulation. Having created the conditions of the free platform, the driver can test his own skills in reverse gear mode. He needs to make turns left and right, and try not to leave the imaginary parking space. If a car enthusiast conducts a dozen of such trainings, then later he will be able to park even with his eyes closed.

Also, in the parking process, novice motorists rely too much on mirrors. In fairness, it is worth noting that they do not choose such tactics on their own. Even during training, many car instructors inspire them that when parking, there is no need to turn their heads around. Novice drivers learn this rule and then make an accident. Fortunately, the lesson they received is beneficial to them and subsequently, when parking, they no longer use only one mirror. The fact is that the latter have a very limited overview. So turning your head will be a very valuable addition in the parking process. Nevertheless, ignoring mirrors is still not worth it.

Often, novice drivers do not take into account the features of a single car, which entails the creation of an emergency. For example, all-wheel drive cars have a maximum turning radius. In turn, rear-wheel drive vehicles cannot boast a large turning radius.

Gadgets to help

Previously, motorists had only their own reactions, eyesight and rear-view mirrors, but now they have useful electronic devices in their arsenal.

One of them is parking sensors. Through a sound signal or visualization, he tells the motorist the distance to the nearest obstacle.

It is noteworthy that many premium cars are equipped with a special parking assistant. This gadget is able to independently park the car in the parking lot without the participation of the driver.

However, you should not rely entirely on electronic devices. Sometimes they break down or start to work incorrectly - “hang” or “slow down”, as is often the case with conventional computers. In other words, motorists must learn to make independent decisions. Only in this way will they be ready for prompt and correct action in the event of unusual situations. And there have been more and more of these recently. Indeed, every year there is less free space in megacities. Sometimes motorists have to literally seep between parked cars, and then leave the interior of their own cars almost through the sunroof.

Types of parking

According to opinion polls, the vast majority of novice motorists experience the most problems with the implementation of the so-called parallel parking. And this is not surprising. Since this is the most difficult type of parking maneuver. But if the driver thoroughly understands it, then subsequently it will not be difficult for him to park his vehicle in parallel with other cars.

In order to correctly perform parallel parking and not catch nearby cars, the driver must adhere to the following rules:

  • it is necessary to drive to the parking spot smoothly, maintaining a certain distance to parked cars (depending on the situation, it can be 50 cm or 1 m),
  • the steering wheel should be turned all the way to the left side and begin to move, controlling the situation using the rear-view mirror located on the left side,
  • as soon as the motorist succeeds in aligning the left rear corner of his own car with the front corner of the vehicle, which is located behind, the steering wheel needs to be aligned (for this you need to make 1.5 turns to the left),
  • you should take it back very carefully, without rushing, while aligning the bumper of your own car with the bumper of the vehicle in front (do not forget about the distance to the curb stone or the edge of the curb - you can control it with a special mirror of a spherical type).

Also, experienced drivers do not recommend novice car enthusiasts to use auxiliary electronic devices when parking in parallel, whether it is a parking assistant or an assistant. After all, the main thing for a beginner is to feel for himself the moment when a series of manipulations with the accelerator pedal set the vehicle in motion. By the way, it is most convenient to make parallel parking in reverse. In this case, the maneuverability of the machine increases significantly.

No less difficulties for novice drivers and causes perpendicular parking, although compared to parallel, it is much easier to perform.

As for parking the car diagonally - So this is one of the easiest maneuvers. Beginners master it in just a few days. That is why they do not have any problems when parking at the same large shopping centers, where parking lots have diagonal markings. By the way, such parking should be called only before. As for the exit, it is necessary to use the same path of arrival, while passing cars passing by.

Before stopping on this or that way of parking, the motorist needs to decide how he will then leave the parking lot. A competent parking maneuver implies 2 basic rules:

  • the driver must park his car carefully, safely for himself,
  • while the driver is obliged to park his car in such a way as not to create obstacles to other road users.

However, before starting parking, the driver needs to evaluate the environment.

First, he must make sure that the available space is suitable for the planned parking maneuver.

Secondly, he should pay attention to road signs located next to the parking lot. Perhaps parking in this place is prohibited by traffic rules. In this case, already parked cars should not mislead the motorist. It is possible that they all violate existing rules. Simply put, you need to have your head on your shoulders. Otherwise, you can’t avoid a meeting with the traffic police, which is fraught with unplanned financial costs for the payment of a fine.

But, as a rule, many novice drivers comply with traffic rules. True, this does not protect their cars from damage. After all, they park their cars in potentially dangerous places - next to a construction site or under the roof of a house, with which icicles hang dangerously in the winter season. If the car is insured, the driver will be compensated for the damage. If he did not have time to insure his car, then he will have to part with an impressive amount of money.

Breaking stereotypes

It is believed that women park worse than men. The formation of such an opinion in society is facilitated by numerous videos on the Internet. In this case, statistics indicate the opposite. According to her, the fair sex spend 21 seconds on parking maneuvers, rather than 16 seconds, like men. Moreover, the latter often violate parking rules. Among men, only 53% of motorists do not violate traffic rules when parking. In women, this figure reaches 77%.

However, any novice driver, regardless of gender, encounters difficulties in carrying out a parking maneuver, especially if it is parallel parking, which must be carried out in a car-laden yard of a house.

Но со временем начинающие автолюбители преодолевают свой страх и становятся опытными участниками дорожного движения. Некоторым удается преодолеть этот путь максимально безболезненно, то есть без попадания в ДТП.

Others, and such an overwhelming majority, go through many trials that involve not only additional financial costs, but also emotional experiences.

However, arriving in a metropolis for one or another business, residents from the hinterland find themselves in an unusual environment and instantly get lost. It seems to them that squeezing your car into the existing free spaces on city streets is simply unrealistic. And they park in prohibited traffic regulations places: on sidewalks, lawns.

That is why every motorist, regardless of their place of residence, must master all types of parking. After all, sooner or later he will be in a situation where he will have to carry out a complex parking maneuver.
