Image size too large? Doesn't fit into a letter or website? Now we’ll quickly figure out how to make him lose weight! Probably everyone at least once faced with the need to reduce the size of the image. After all, pictures from digital cameras and even from mobile phones are not at all small in size.
It’s not difficult to master a couple of tricks. To do this, it is not necessary to put such a monster as Photoshop. This can be done using standard Windows 7/8/10 tools or using third-party utilities.
How does it even work?
Before reducing images, it is useful to understand how it works, which way to go and how much you can compress the picture. In use, several image formats are used:
- BMP - not compressed images, are very large
- JPG or JPEG - compressed images, the most common format
- PNG and GIF are also compressed images. They weigh more than JPG, but have additional features, like a transparent background or animation (gifs)
There are also a million more formats, but it’s important to understand that:
- BMP can always be reduced tenfold by simply converting it to JPEG
- PNG and GIF - you can also compress, but not by tens, but by 1.5-3 times, while losing a transparent background or animation, if any.
- If the file is already JPEG, then you can compress by reducing the resolution and / or quality
Resolution is the number of dots in the image horizontally and vertically. For example, a camera with a 10.1 megapixel matrix has a resolution of 3648 × 2736 pixels. It may need to be reduced to 640 × 480 pixels, for example. That is, you can reduce the size of the photo by converting it to another format or by reducing the resolution of the image.
INTERESTING: if your file has a BMP extension, then it can be reduced many times by simply saving to JPEG. If at the same time to use 100% quality, then the difference in the eye will not be noticeable. How? Read below.
How to reduce image size using standard Windows 7/8/10 tools
For this we need a standard Paint image editor. You can watch the video or read the article:
Actions on points:
- Right click on the image and select “Change”
- If this is not the case, then select "Open with -> Paint"
- In "Paint" click on "Resize"
- And enter in percentage by how much to reduce the picture, or specifically in pixels. By the way, in Windows XP you can enter only a percentage. If you leave the “Keep aspect ratio” ticked, the image will not be flattened or stretched.
- We save the image in JPEG.
The only thing that cannot be done in Paint is to change the saving quality in JPEG (compression quality), but this can be done in third-party utilities. By the way, the Paint program is still useful to you to take screenshots.
Compress photo sizes with Irfan View
The Irfan View program is one of the most popular, very light, it allows you to correct photos in different ways. Worldwide, about 1 million people per month download it! Download the wonderful and free program IrfanView on the official website from the Download section.
During installation, you can click “Next” all the time. To apply the Russifier, at the first start, go to the menu “Options -> Change language ...” and select “RUSSIAN.DLL”.
After installing the program, "Open with -> IrfanView" will appear in the context menu of the images. We select it.
Go to the menu “Image -> Resize Image”
The window provides the opportunity to change the size at your discretion, to whom it is convenient. You can enter the desired size in pixels, centimeters or inches, it is possible in percent, you can choose one of the standard sizes, or just click the “Reduce by half” button
I also recommend choosing the Lanczos (slowest) conversion algorithm. This is the highest quality algorithm, and slow speed will be noticeable only with batch conversion of tens and hundreds of images (this function is also in the program).
Now save the file in the menu “File -> Save As” and select the type of JPEG. Here you can choose JPEG compression quality. The higher the better. The loss of quality from 90% is almost imperceptible, and at 100% there is almost no loss of quality, but the file size increases. For large images intended to be uploaded to the site, it makes sense to check the "Progressive JPG format" checkbox. In this case, the image will not be loaded from top to bottom, but at first it will appear blurry, and then the full version. I think you have seen this on the Internet.
I just want to send an email to Outlook!
And if the task is simply to reduce the size of the attachment in Microsoft Outlook, then in the message editing window, click “Attachment Options ...” and select “Reduce the image” (“Select picture size:”) and the preferred size. You can set “Large (1024 × 768)” (“Large”) if there are few images in the attachment.
Now you can easily save pictures with the desired resolution for the site, mail or desktop without installing Photoshop. Share this helpful tip with your friends using social media buttons!
Resize in Paint
To change the height and width dimensions, I do not recommend using any online services, as this can be done using the standard set of programs and even the standard editor of the Windows operating system - Paint.
Open the image in Paint and on the tab "Home" there is an item "Resize".
By clicking on it, we can resize without losing quality (if we reduce it) and without losing proportions. To do this, be sure to activate the setting to maintain proportions.
By changing the horizontal and vertical dimensions, you adjust the width and height of the image, respectively. Select the necessary parameters, click on the "OK" button, and then save the resulting file to your computer.
On this resizing image in Paint finished.
By the way, changing the width and height parameters also affects the weight of the image. Therefore, take note of this.
Now consider the option using Photoshop.
Resize in Photoshop
Open our image in the program and move to the item "Image - Image Size".
In the next window, the change occurs in the same way as in Paint. Make sure that there is a check box for maintaining proportions and set the necessary parameters for height or width.
After clicking on the "OK" button, the size parameters will be applied and you can save the file.
These methods are quite enough for resizing the height and width of images.
Now we will look at 2 ways to reduce the weight of images.
But before that I want to note that you already know one way. If you do not need images in excess of large sizes, then you can reduce their height and width, thereby reducing the weight by several, or even tens of times.
Weight Loss in Photoshop
This method will be very useful to site owners, since the less the page weighs, the faster it loads. And this is very important. The method is also suitable for any needs.
After opening the image in Photoshop, you need to immediately save it, but not usually, but for the web and devices.
In the next window, you need to set the image quality parameters:
- Quality is high (60-70). Adjust the value to your needs,
- The format is jpeg. If you need to save transparent areas on the image, you need the png format,
- Also set the "Progressive" setting.
You can also resize directly in this window, and not separately through the item "Image - Image Size", as I showed in the paragraph earlier. It is very convenient.
After setting the parameters, save the settings (see the screenshot above).
Only in this way I was able to reduce the weight of the image from 116 kb to 75 kb, without changing the size (the height and width remained the same).
In this method, you can play with a quality value. It all depends on why you need to reduce the weight of the image. It is possible that you can put a parameter and less, making the weight even less.
Now consider how to reduce weight using the online service.
Online service for optimization
This method is very useful already for thumbnails. For example, if I already reduced the picture earlier in Photoshop, then with the service we can finish the size finally.
The service is called krakin.io. We pass on to it. I gave the link right away to the image selection page.
On this page, you must first determine the degree of image compression. There are 2 parameters responsible for this:
- Lossy - strong compression (default),
- Lossless - less compression.
You can decide on this parameter only by testing them. Therefore, try to compress the picture and so and so, and then choose the option you want.
Then you can upload an image that is immediately optimized without your participation. To do this, click on the file selection area from the computer.
The image is immediately optimized and a progress report we will see under the area for selecting a file.
It can be seen that the original file size was 77 kb, and after optimization it became 59 kb. It also shows how much was compressed in kilobytes (18 kb) and in percentage terms (23.8%).
To save the compressed image, you must click on the button "Download this file" in the last column "Status". We will be transferred to a new tab, where the final image will open, so that we can evaluate it. To save, right-click on the image and select "Save Picture As".
Then, according to the standard, we select the save location and prescribe the file name.
If you watched the video at the beginning of the article, where I clearly showed the process and all the nuances of this article, then you know that only these methods can reduce the image from 360 kb to 40 kb. And this is not the limit.
This material has come to an end. You will be overwhelmed with all the methods described in the article as an ordinary Internet user.
In the comments below, I will be interested to know some of your ways to reduce the weight of images. Maybe there is something simpler, but effective. Therefore, I am waiting for you below the comment form.
Ways to Reduce JPG Data Size
Reducing the dimensions of the picture itself. Suppose a user has an image with a pixel size of 1024 × 768. This is a big picture, but it can be physically “trimmed” using the services built into Windows 10 or third-party programs. The method allows you to remove pixels that do not carry important information (usually a background), cutting out only an important area. The width and height of the image in pixels becomes smaller, for example, 650 × 370, and the quality is preserved.
Technically complex process of reducing the "weight" of the image (MB or GB), in which there is a high probability of loss of image quality. The compression mechanism (quantization) acts like this - it finds the same or similar zones by its characteristics and replaces them with a kind of standard. For example, an image has 23 pixels of the same color. When compressed, they are replaced by one large "average" pixel. Because of this, blurry and fuzzy areas, transition effects and other defects appear in the photo.
If the image has a large number of similar pixels, then the frame compression process will be of high quality (that is, the “weight” of a photo of 4 GB, for example, will be reduced to 1.3 GB). But at the same time, the quality of the picture itself will become very low. If the same pixels are few, then the “weight” of the photo will not actually decrease, but the quality will not suffer.
Important! There are many software products for editing file sizes. But most sites on the Internet offer users to use Paint. The functionality of the tool built into Windows 10 is too small and inefficient to perform high-quality editing. Therefore, it is better not to use Paint. There are other ways.
Photoshop is the best graphics tool
The software product is designed for experienced users, but a beginner can also perform such simple tasks as reducing the size of a JPG image. The program needs to be downloaded on the network and installed on a PC. Software installation is standard. After installation, it is better to restart the computer. Next, to compress the jpg size, you need to do this:
- run photoshop,
- in the menu "File" (File) select "Open" (Open),
- specify the path to the file with which to work,
- click "Open" (Open),
- go to the “Image” tab (Image),
- from the list select “Image Size” (Size Image),
- manually change the values in the new window in the uppermost block,
- Click OK.
Then save the object. Using Photoshop, you can reduce the weight of the file. The procedure is also performed.
- in the File menu, select “Save for web”,
- in a new window, select 2 or 4 options in the horizontal panel,
- determine the compression option for image quality,
- select it by clicking with the mouse,
- Click “Save”.
Compression using the Caesium program
A simpler but less functional program is Caesium. It is installed on a PC as standard and has a very friendly interface. To edit an object, launch a software product, perform the following actions:
Download the installation file from the official website:
- drag the photo to be compressed into the white area of the program interface,
choose a path to save compressed objects,
click on the button “Compress!”,
File Optimizer - compress multiple photos at once
This is also the installation file. You will have to download and install it on your PC. The installation is standard. A program with the simplest functionality, but an English interface. Use it like this:
- run File Optimizer,
- select the File menu and go to Add files,
- specify the path to the object or objects,
- after adding them to the central unit, go to the Optimizer menu,
- select from the list Optimizer all files,
- wait for the process to complete.
The utility is convenient in that it allows you to simultaneously optimize the size of several files at once. The more they are included in the process, the longer it takes.
